Lucius Malfoy had found himself on Hogwarts grounds once more. It seemed to be a common thing of late for him to be visiting the school. Quite frankly he wasn't too happy with how things were being done.
Too add more to his grief he heard rumors of a certain werewolf was now teaching. He really was better off having sent his son to Durmstrang instead of listening to his wife.
Much to his dismay he had been on the way to the headmaster's office when he crossed path with the professor in question. The fact that doorway was blocked by a cluster of students forced him to wait.
"I see that they must be really hard up for teachers for the Dark Arts positions if you managed to get the job," Lucius loftily commented with a smug expression. Both his hands resting on the walking stick he held in front of him.
He would recognize that poisonous tone anywhere, no matter how long it had been since he had last heard it. That old snake in the grass. His lips thin, head tilting just slightly as he fought down the urge to come back with something as snarky as his days as a Marauder proper (at least while students were around). Everyone had their thoughts on the Malfoys, Lucius in particular, but after they had been 'cleared' all that time ago, they acted like they owned the world.
He let out a breath and a false smile came to his lips as he met the other's eyes without difficulty. "Considering I was specifically requested to come and join the staff here by Dumbledore himself before certain others would be offered the position, I'll take his opinion of my teaching skills over yours, Malfoy." While the smile remained, his eyes were pure hatred.
"Considering, who they had as previous teacher?" There was no need to even explain who he was. Word of Lockheart's true actions and dark secrets had spread quickly.
He gave a dry heartless chuckle. He noted the hatred in Remus's eyes and took pleasure in it. For now he was remaining civil. There was more he wanted to say openly, but for now he with held his comments. Soon enough Lucius would have his way.
"I would say that Dumbledore's taste in his staff is slipping greatly."
Lockheart had been a frustrating but welcomed loss as he had been one giant lie to the Wizarding community as a whole. Lupin's lips thinned even more, watching as students started to move away, but still kept his voice down when he said, "ah, of course you would say that, considering your sniveling git of a lackey still hasn't been offered the position." He might have known more about Snape than most, and truly couldn't hate the man that had come to their side any longer (still dislike, yes) but he couldn't act like anything but an enemy to the man.
"Why don't you toddle off to tea why those of us who have real work to do, do so?" How was it that just the mere sight of Malfoy could send him into the same mindset of a teenager again?
Lucius couldn't help but sneer back at the other. he had been wondering when Severus's name would crop up in conversation. Not that it was mentioned, but he knew well enough to whom Remus was referring to. He was all too familiar with the rivalry that went on between his friend and Potter's group.
"If I were you I would be careful what you say. Someone might let it slip about your little condition." he replied in a cold tone.
Bloody hell, just how many people knew? It wasn't the best known of all secrets - the staff knew here at Hogwarts but he did everything he could to keep it under wraps. How the hell had Malfoy found out? He managed to keep his surprise, and the rapidly following anger, under wraps, before he gave a cool smirk instead, keeping his voice light.
"And if that should happen, someone might make sure to investigate a little more closely into your comings and goings recently. If I hear correctly, it might make a few heads turn if they learned." Was he bullshitting? Oh, yes, but only in the sense he currently had no idea what Lucius was up to. Instead, he was banking on the fact that Lucius Malfoy was one of the foulest people out there and almost always had his fingers in pots they didn't belong in.
"As it is," he kept going, refusing to let it hang too long before his false bravado was discovered, "everything here is well under control and the students are doing well in Defense, which is what matters. If you forgot, we're currently in a school."
Oh, he certainly hit a nerve and it amused Lucius greatly. Being friends with Severus certainly had its advantages. Although, he had to admit that he was impressed with other's wit. The story was almost believable. Almost.
"I certainly hope you have enough proof to back that little story up." he replied in a cool tone. "Meddling in something that's too big for you will only get you into more trouble."
Oh if you had half an idea in your empty head besides your own pride about Snape...
Remus snorted, a bit loudly, before he raised a brow. "Should take your own advice, Malfoy." His look was pointed, considering the fact Lucius had started it off with the threat of revealing his condition. "Why don't you go back to your hole? Why are you even here?"
Maybe you could get your fool of a son to actually pay more attention to his studies. Oh no, wait, following right in your footsteps. Naturally good at most things, knowing he will be able to drop anything he isn't eventually.
"My business here, doesn't concern you," Lucius replied continuing to speak in a cool tone. Yet, it actually did concern the other man. Now that the crowded corridors have thinned out he took that as a cue to deal with the particular matter. He sneered in Remus's direction before he turned and headed toward the headmaster's office.
Remus stared after Lucius for several long moments, fingers curling tightly against his side. Rich, sodding git. He felt his teeth grit for several seconds before an idea came to him. It was a ridiculous, bloody awful idea but he couldn't help himself in feeling almost like it was in order to pay respect to his friends. A smirk touched his lips before he headed off to see if he could spot Potter among the students.
They needed to talk.
It might not have been difficult, later, to figure out exactly who had managed to dye both of the Malfoy's clean white hair a brilliant hot pink that seemed to stubbornly remain no matter what sort of spell was done to it, but given that Potter was in class and Remus just so happened to be teaching that class when it actually went off, it would be very difficult to prove.
The Malfoys did not react well to the prank. Their usual pale faces almost matched the new color of their hair. The fact that he was in Hogwarts and in front of a large crowd barely kept him level headed as Lucius fumed inside. It was a struggle to refrain from pulling out his wand and hexing anyone in sight. Although his hand, curled around the top of the walking stick ready to pull his wand out.
It also didn't help that the poltergeist took this as a cute to make more of a mess. The laughter and large crowd that was getting bigger by the moment did not help the situation at all.
It took several of the staff to clear the corridors and Professor Snape and Professor Dumbledore to lead the humiliated Malfoys away from the scene. That was when Lucius exploded with rage.
Of course they didn't react well to the prank! Not like Remus had been expecting anything less, and he would have given anything to be there to see his prank actually go off. It had been James, their brilliant mind among them, who had figured out the best way to set a spell to go off to a specific person, something he had mostly kept to himself except for the Order. Dumbledore might spot what was done, might, but Remus can whistle and hum because there was no way to tie him to it.
Peeves only adding to the situation made it a thousand times better. Only just helped to take Lucius and Draco Malfoy down a peg. The man infuriated him on every level and he can only guess that Draco did worse to Harry. Thankfully, Harry had his own little team around him to help out and keep him safe.
A few days later Lucius composed a howler and had Professor Snape deliver it in person to Remus. If the howler wasn't enough to embarrass him, having Professor Snape be the one deliver it and be witness to it should be.
He was quite aware that the professor in question was behind the prank. Only there was no way to prove it. He was familiar with Remus's crowd and the trouble they caused. And this certainly fit into their grand scheme.
Only because of how well timed the prank was set there was no real trace that Lucius could prove and use. That only made him more mad.
Draco greeted Remus at the door and let him inside. He was glad to see that the other looked more well rested. "Everything's good. I don't think there should be major issues." He stated so Remus had an idea of what he was walking into.
Today things were more calmer. Narcissa appeared to be quite and didn't say much to Remus. She was still mad that Lucius gave permission that Draco could go with him. It took her a long time before she agreed and that was only because she was out numbered. Lucius gave a nod in greeting, but kept his expression neutral.
Ah. This should go well. Remus let out a breath and nodded to both of them, somehow even despite Tonks' attempt to help him in his dressing he still felt shabby among the Malfoys. "Would you rather deal with this first," glancing to the older Malfoys, "or finish with the dementors? Both need to be handled before I leave tonight, and Tonks offered to stay up with Teddy in the mean time."
"Let's deal with my parents...while things are still good. They still really don't like the idea of me helping you with the dementors, but are allowing it." Draco replied.
He was a bit nervous himself dealing with the dementors, but he knew the had to be captured. Otherwise, he would constantly worry about his parents and wouldn't be able to leave till they were caught.
"As long as you want to help." Remus was serious on that; he wasn't about to force someone to help with creatures that frightening. "Also, we were lucky - no damage done to the camera so we still have our weapon against them."
A quick flash of a smile before he focused on the two pArents that still didn't look very pleased with him. Why was he doing his again?
"I... assume everything was discussed while I was gone?" Anorher reason he returned home earlier that morning, allowing the Malfoys time to talk.
"I still do," Draco replied. He was relieved to know that he didn't break the camera. That wouldn't have been good on his behalf. "Not to mention that's not a task that shouldn't be done alone."
Lucius placed his paper down that he was reading when the conversation was focused on them. "Yes, everything has been settled." He then glanced at Narcissa who simply nodded and refused to look at Remus.
That seemed almost more natural. Remus fought back a sigh at Narcissa's actions, knowing Tonks would want to know about it though, and kept his voice lighter as he spoke to Draco. "Then I want to make sure you understand your end of things.
We have a guest room that will be yours while you're with us. We're on the floo Network though we connect and reconnect as we need it. While you're with us, we'd need you to follow the house rules. It isn't much, but with Teddy in the house, keeping up silencing charms at night has become a requiement. You'll have to deal with the baby at times as well."
He gave a nod in agreement. A little reluctant about dealing with a baby. He's never dealt with one before. He knew that he wasn't going to be the center of things either. But if this would give him the direction he needed to prove himself...then he would deal with it.
"I understand...but I'll still be able to contact my parents?"
"Course you will. Whatever method you all choose is fine enough though we try not to owl that much in the city." He chuckled quietly, as if it was a bit of an old joke. "Fire if it's easiest for you all."
And, he imagined, it would let Narcissa see her child was well.
At this Draco looked relieved. He also noted that Narcissa appeared to be more relaxed. Narcissa used this opportunity to speak as well.
"The other day you had mentioned possible help...I think we're ready to accept that help," Narcissa softly commented. At the mention of this Lucius's expression was one of defeat and he looked away. So this was how she was going to get back at him.
Draco silently watched the battle going on between his parents a little amused by it. His father could never win against his mother. She always got her way.
It never felt good to be in the middle of things. Remus bit back any urge to give a displeased look it anything of the sort and instead let this work out to everyone's advantage - Lucius clearly needed the help.
"I'm glad to hear it." Look at the werewolf being diplomatic. "Melinda Solvens. She's an American, but she's excellent at her job. Unless this place happens to be on the floo network, it's going to take her a few days to arrive as it is. To start, she just wants to meet you both and make sure she can help."
"Malfoy manor was connected...but not our summer home. Please, let her know we will be willing to meet her. From there we can find if this is suitable." Narcissa replied.
They could have had it connected, but the purpose was to get away from everything. It wasn't until recent did she wonder about that decision.
"I'll let her know tonight. Should only take her about two days to arrive. I'll warn you - she can be... brisk. More so than most Americans." Joking, somewhat. "She's very to the point about things, so don't get too offended."
Figured the warning might be well needed.
Then he looked to Draco and with a false-ironic cheerfulness, asked, "ready to try round two against them? Then we'll need to get your trunks and head out."
