It seemed Teddy was relatively well behaved. He looked around and crooned since it seemed like Draco would make everything better. It was messy and probably took more wipes than necessary to handle but some quick wand work and deduction would make it less messy than Muggles had to deal with. Hopefully Draco would have some indication to use the baby powder though!
Last minute he spied the baby powder and placed some on before putting the diaper on. Of course, some of it still ended up on him as well in a small burst of powder explosion.
He checked a few times before he believed that the diaper was on correctly and secure. He tossed the soiled diaper away before putting the clothes back on. At least this part was a small success. "Did I past the first test, Teddy?" He asked as he let the baby go back to the toys.
Teddy certainly seemed to think so! He burbled in that way babies do and crawled awkwardly to get over to his toys, faceplanting hard but he got up moments later and played happily. When it got closer to the end of the hour though, with Teddy occupied by sounds and lights, eventually he slowly crawled back towards Draco, a chubby hand grasping at his pants leg.
Draco spent most of the hour playing with Teddy and the various toys, getting them to make the various sounds and lights. When Teddy wanted his attention, Draco figured he must be hungry.
"Ready for a bottle?" He asked and picking him up, he went to follow the instructions of how to prepare the bottle and testing it to see if it was warm enough to drink and not to hot. This wasn't so bad...then today he didn't seem as fussy.
Then again Draco had only been watching the baby for an hour which was barely anything. Teddy looked pleased when he was picked up, then tried to get a handle of platinum blond hair. Good luck with that, Draco.
However, when the bottle was presented to him, he greedily latched onto the nipple and started drinking the milk, grasping the bottle himself and peering up at Draco as he drank.
Draco was quite lucky. The real test would be babysitting him for a few hours.
"Hey, easy on the hair there, buddy," Draco commented as Teddy managed to grab some of his hair. He could only imagine what it would have been if he had his father's long hair. At least Teddy was content with the bottle.
Lucius probably could tell stories about Draco grabbing hair when he was a baby; it was just something babies tended to do. Teddy looked oh-so-innocently up at Draco as he drank, sucking hard on the bottle while at least old enough to keep it up himself. One small problem was Tonks had forgotten to tell Draco about burping the baby, which could be a messy issue in oh, ten minutes or so.
Vaguely, Draco remembered Remus telling him about the burping part. He had also been warned that it could be messy too. This was just going to be one of those messy days. He looked for a cloth to put on his shoulder, while Teddy was finishing up the bottle.
"Yes, practice working on that innocent look. It's going to save you from getting into trouble later on," Draco teased. He placed the now empty bottle on the table as he picked up Teddy. Placing him the way Draco remembered Remus holding him, he patted Teddy's back.
Good thing Draco remembered the cloth, because the burp was indeed quite messy. Still, he gave a happy burble when he finished and immediately, since it was in close range, grabbed a handful of hair again and laughed as he held on tight. Clearly going to be quite a handful the more he grew up for Remus and Tonks!
Draco winced at the hair pulling, this was something he was not used to dealing with or expecting. He knew he couldn't be mad at Teddy, this was clearly a baby thing. He wondered how his father put up with all of that when he had been a baby. He struggled to gently rearrange, Teddy so that way his hair was out of reach. He knew that Teddy was having fun...but this was rather painful for him.
Teddy looked quite innocent as if he hadn't just been doing that, blinking up with a wide smile at Draco before shoving a fist into his mouth and sucking on it. There was not a sound from upstairs yet, if Tonks was asleep or perhaps just resting along side of Remus, but Remus would probably still be unmoving for many hours more. Draco had seen just a part of how terrible his curse really was.
Draco debated on waking up Tonks since the hour was clearly up...but he felt that for now things were okay. Let her rest a little longer. It had been a rough morning, and he doubted she got any sleep the night before.
"Let's get you a toy," he suggested. He went back into the living room and grabbing a toy or two sat on the couch with Teddy. At least it wouldn't be his hair.
Given the chance to sleep, and with his biological needs met, Teddy was pretty happy to play for a while beside Draco on the couch before he gave a great wide yawn of his own, then over the next few minutes, just put his head right down on the couch and fell asleep there, splayed out among his toys. He looked utterly content in his sleep, the kind of sleep adults never got but wish they could. The house went quiet with his sleep, leaving Draco the sole waking occupant of it.
It would be another hour or so before Tonks made her way back downstairs, in a bright purple robe and fuzzy slippers, a hand covering her mouth as she yawned. When she spotted Draco and Teddy, her brows went sleepily up. "...Did you let me over sleep?" she accused, but not unkindly.
Draco gave a small smile and rubbed Teddy's back when he saw that the baby had fallen asleep. He was actually content with the moment of silence in the house, since things had been so hectic all morning.
He only glanced up when he heard Tonks coming down the stairs. "Things were going alright. I didn't mind watching him longer for you," he replied with a sheepish smile.
Tonks looked briefly uncertain before slowly, she smiled. She walked over and slowly sat down on the couch beside Teddy, touching his head gently. "Thank you," she said with a quiet warmth. "It's,.. Rough in the mornings after and usually, my mother can come by but she was busy today."
Which reminded her that they would end up meeting, wouldn't it? Andromeda and Draco. How would that go?
He gave a curious glance her way at the mention of her mother. He knew they were related, but just hearing it made it more real.
"What is she like?" he asked softly, realizing it's a touchy subject. His mother never mentions her sister at all. He wondered briefly if his mother would want to try to get in touch with her again, since so much had happened and that she no longer had Bellatrix. He wondered how she would react to his presence.
"My mother?" Tonks raised her brows, then thought about it. How did she explain Andromeda? "I suppose you could call her a walking contradiction." She gave a small smile at the thought. "She's a strong woman who defied her family to marry someone she loved. She was a Slytherin but somehow she just doesn't seem to be like most. Then again she is a cunning witch." A chuckle and she leaned back, looking to her cousin.
Draco gave a small oh. He could understand why his mother choose to leave her, but at the same time...He did find her impressive to do what she wanted despite what her family expected. He wondered if that's partially why his mother was trying to be supportive of his changes--having guilt of not supporting her own sister?
"What does she look like?" he couldn't help but ask. He had never seen any photos and he wondered how much she resembled his mother and aunt Bellatrix.
...Had Narcissa and Lucius really kept Draco from knowing anything at all about Andromeda?! Tonks bit back a rude sound before she got up and walked over to a series of photographs on the wall, picking a frame up and coming back over. She offered it to Draco as she sat back down.
Andromeda looked back with a small smile on her lips, Teddy cradled proudly in her arms with Remus and Tonks on either side of her. She did look so much like her sisters in her facial structure and body, but her eyes were softer and her hair lighter.
"...it's funny how I ended up looking so much more like my father than anyone else. I don't really think I look like mum's side of the family." Good.
He studied the picture for a while, carefully studying the picture looking at the various differences. He gave a small smile wishing he had known her more.
"Mother never talked about her and very rarely her past before marrying my father. Aunt Bellatrix never talked about family in general. But she believed everyone should serve Him. Do you think she would want to see me?" He said as he handed the photos back.
Tonks took the frame, looking down at the four people in the picture as they smiled and tried to stand somewhat still but Remus silently said something that made her laugh and if she remembered right, snort. The memory made her smile.
"Honestly, I think when you were young that she would have, but given you turned into a smaller version of your father and mother? I think she gave up hope as the years went on. Bellatrix-" there was still hate in that name, "she despised utterly and the idea her sister had any hooks in you... doomed you there. But- well- things have changed," she quickly added to end.
He gave nod and hid his annoyance about the comment on his family. Tonks was being honest and he was slowly learning to deal with the negativity toward his parents that people held. He supposed that he would make plans to not be around when she came to visit. He was a little jealous to see how open they were with their feelings in the photo. His family rarely had pictures like them.
"Maybe someday things will change," he replied not fully believing his parents would ever change.
Narcissa has treated her sister horribly; was there any surprise in how Andromeda acted about it all? But... "I didn't expect you to be like this, either," Tonks admitted. "I expected you to still be more like your parents. I don't think my mother would ever be willing to deal with your parents again, but... maybe it will be different with you."
"It's new for me. I'm not used to the idea that its okay to be yourself and not worry about what others think. And that its okay to follow your own thoughts and dreams instead of your parents," Draco admitted. "But I like this new path. Its better."
There was some silence before he spoke again. "Did you need my help with anything else?" He planned to rest a bit if he wasn't needed.
"No, go get some sleep if you'd like, or get something to eat. I can't believe you got him to actually take a nap." Tonks sounded amused about it, but when Draco stood up to go, she quietly added, "I'm glad this is the path you've chosen, for what it's worth. I see why Remus believed in you."
