Draco hated the fact that he couldn't tell the full story. He knew alone it sounded outlandish. There seemed to be no other way he could explain things. He only hoped Jake wouldn't tell the rest of the group as he knew they wouldn't believe one word. If Jake was willing to roll with it for now, Draco would do his best to continue to tell as much truth he could. He just wondered how much longer Jake would continue to believe or accept it.
"Well I'll show you a few things just as you're taking the time to show me things. You're helping me, I'm helping you sort of deal." He said after a while.
Jake hadn't said anything about the stranger things Draco had told him. It seemed pretty confident, and while they might be new as friends, he wasn't the kind to go telling people other people's secrets and issues. Maybe it helped that it felt like he had a little piece of this otherwise weird, good-looking guy who had shown up out of no where.
"Sounds like a deal to me," Jake agreed pretty readily, then suddenly had an idea. "So, dessert here, or there's an ice cream place down the place if you'd prefer?"
"Ice cream sounds pretty good," Draco admitted. He also didn't mind the walk either. It would help use up his nervous energy. Granted, it hadn't been a bad night so far. Awkward, but not bad.
"Then that's what we'll get." Jake flashed a smile to Draco but wondered about that tone in the other's voice. He'd hoped for a good date, but he wasn't so sure that Draco was enjoying it as much as he. He'd just have to work a little harder, that was all.
When the bill came though, Jake snagged it quickly with that waggle of the brow. "I invited you out, so it's my treat."
Draco had been about to reach for the bill, only to realize he hadn't been fast enough. "Fine, as long as I get to pay for the next one," he replied with a grin. It also let Jake know as well, he wouldn't mind going out again with him. The nervous energy was all on himself and not directed at Jake.
It was so strange to having someone else pay for his meal. Even with his friends he had usually been the one to pay for everything. Not that he had minded. At the same time it felt nice to not have to pay.
"Deal." That brilliant smile, the kind that shone in his eyes, as he dropped a credit card onto the bill with only a quick glance. Not so much showing off as not wanting to make a big deal out of it - his paying or the price. He definitely didn't have Draco's money, from what he can tell of the other's lifestyle, but he wasn't unable to support himself, either.
Plus, Draco had definitely just made him a lot happier with the 'next one' comment. Even if it was a touch on the uncertain side, he hoped it meant that Draco was enjoying himself enough that there might be another date. With the camping trip next weekend and what sounded like a trip into London after that, he made some mental plans to take on not just as many hours as he could at work, but do some other odd jobs as well. Lawns, lifting, whatever.
Once the bill was settled, he gave a small gesture just outside the restaurant's front door. "Just a couple of blocks this way. It's one of those fancier places where they'll mix things in, but it's local. I've kind of fallen in love it."
Draco couldn't help but smile. He had to admit that it liked it when Jake's smile showed in his eyes. Probably, because he never was around people that genuinely smiled. He followed Jake out the door.
They had one similar near the school, but of course there were different flavors. He doubted he would see those at this one. He assumed there would still be good ones to try out. Traditional was always good too. He gave a nod in response and walked alongside Jake. He also used the time to familiarize himself with the area some more.
Jake walked with his hands in his pockets, still a small smile playing on his lips. His body read easy and open, happy. He was having a good time.
"So ice cream and the book store. Should take us pretty late." He glanced over, studying Draco. Wondered a little how far the night would take them, but he wouldn't push. "Anyone expecting you back by a certain time?"
"No, they know I would be back pretty late," Draco replied. "They would rather see that I'm out and enjoying myself instead of being staying home all the time doing nothing."
While Draco appeared relaxed, he still couldn't help but be on guard. As he studied the area around him he was always looking for any potential trouble...mainly people he knew. He could never be as open and relaxed as Jake was.
"Is it just you and your parents?" Jake asked, looking over from time to time as they walked. "Siblings? Grandparents? Pets? What's your family like?" He phrased it a touch cautiously, knowing at least that Draco's father had some sort of mental condition and his mother, he believed, was taking care of the man. Or was it a nurse?
"Just me and my parents. No siblings. I never knew my grandparents they had passed away before I had been born. I knew one of my aunts and my godfather. We had the two Irish wolfhounds and my father had albino peacocks at one point. Those birds were loud and annoying. Glad we don't deal with them anymore."
Draco carefully responded. It was difficult to talk about them due to the combination of what happened and then not trying to reveal too much of their world. He figured for now he would start off with the basic stuff.
Jake actually choked a little when Draco got to peacocks. "Albino peacocks?!" He laughed a little. "You're joshing me. No way- you're serious. Are they even pets or do they just look super fancy? I've never heard of anyone keeping a peacock as a bloody pet... that's proper brilliant." The whole idea was almost ludicrous and hysterical.
"Irish Wolfhounds... those are the right giant ones, right? Make any man feel small."
"It was more of my dad flaunting the fact he had money," Draco replied amused.
"The dogs were our pets and very loyal. They were super protective of us and especially me. When I was younger they would put up with what ever I did to them. But let anyone try to threaten me in their pressence they would go off on the person. We had to give them when things were getting rough and we didn't want them in trouble. They're with a good family now." It was clear he missed them, but it woukd be cruel to take them back after having to give them up.
"Pretty different than Lucky, actually. He's a shelter dog, dumb as a brick, but with a big heart. He was the one thing I got to take from my parents place because they didn't want him, either." Jake shrugged, as if it didn't bother him. "Once you're out of university, you'll be on your own... Maybe you'll get your chance to get a wolfhound of your own?" He smiled. "Doctor's pay will help since they need a lot of room, I assume."
"How can you ignore someone like Lucky? He's more approachable." Draco pointed out.
"But with my family its really hard to get to know them an earn their trust. So I suppose the Irish wolfhounds fit. Speaking of my parents, they can be pretty strict. They expectted alot from me. To make things harder my godfather taught at the school I went to. And he didn't let anything escape. I had to be the best at everything and if I slacked they were informed."
"Lucky loves absolutely everyone. I joke that if someone broke in to my place, he would only be able to lick them to death. He doesn't even bark." Jake laughed, shaking his head. "Your parents sound a lot like mine, actually. It was like a giant shame to them that their son was anything other than a copy of themselves."
He grinned, even if it was a touch sad. "Grades mattered a lot to them, to."
Draco couldn't help but laugh about Lucky. "He still sounds like a great dog. Maybe I will get another after school is done. I would have never guessed your folks to be so strict. Even though we're close , there are times I wish they would give up the old ways."
"My folks are... Yeah. They exist." It's a bit of a dark tone there, not at all happy about really talking about them. "I love them, but they only loved the idea of me instead of just me." But that moment of darkness passed before he leaned back, hands in his pockets, looking up at the stars.
Draco found himself placing a hand over Jake's shoulder. "We're both here for a new beginning." He spoke in a soft voice as he attempted to reassure Jake.
He felt bad that Jake and his parents weren't close. He supposed that he was lucky in that sense. He's not sure what he wouls have done without them.
What would have happened if Draco's friends of the past could see him now? Interacting with a Muggle, Nevermind being on a date? Being kind, empathetic...? Not the same blond who had been in Hogwarts.
Jake knew none of that past and instead, took Draco as he was here and now. He gave a small smile of affection in return for the touch on his shoulder. "Don't worry about it. Like I said, that was then. I came for my future here and hey, maybe you were the thing I needed to push me to it."
It was frightening for Draco allowing himself to be this open with someone he barely knew or wouldn't have acknowledged in the past. He had so many mixed feelings running through him right now and had no one he felt comfortable talking with. He did know that he enjoyed being with Jake. But somewhere down the line he was going to have make some decisions that would probably cut some tied and stir up a commotion.
"It's weird," Jake admitted quietly, looking to Draco with an almost indescribable look. It made his eyes dark, curious. "As soon as we met, it felt like there was something there. Cheesy I know but-"
"Malfoy!"
Jake stopped when suddenly a voice cut him off. He looked up the sidewalk to see three other guys, who all looked keenly interested in Draco. Friends of his?
Anything that Jake was saying was forgotten as Draco tensed at the familiar voice and figures approaching him. His hands automatically clinched as he stepped forward in front of Jake. Not so much to hide him, but in a sense of protecting him from what he was going to witness.
Draco had to admit it felt strange seeing Goyle being the one in charge. He had always been told how lost Goyle and Crabbe where when he wasn't around. He wondered how long they had noted he was there and how much they had witnessed. He really hoped they saw nothing...but his luck couldn't be that good.
"Goyle,, Nott, Zabini, fancy meeting the three of you here," Draco replied in a stiff voice.
Where those all last names? That was so awkward. Jake didn't miss that faintly protective gesture and his stomach sunk with it. Bollocks, this had to be some of those people Draco was talking about about. He sounded completely different talking to these three than he had when they were just talking together, or even around his own little gang. He studied the three and their somewhat odd style of clothing, his eyes narrowing.
Goyle smirked, which did nothing to make his ugly face more handsome. In Jake's opinion, he looked a bit like a gorilla and twice as ugly. "We're on our way to celebrate the latest Quidditch Match." Speaking openly in front of Jake because he couldn't imagine the idea of Draco speaking with a Muggle.
While Jake's brows lifted slightly. Quidditch? It sounded almost like a sport.
Zabini peered over towards Jake, one brow lightly raised, arms crossed over his chest. This wasn't someone he recognized, dressed entirely in Muggle clothing. They had to dress somewhat acceptably to make their way over to the tavern they planned to be at, but this one looked far too comfortable in the mode of dress.
....And this is why Draco never let Goyle speak first. Stupid, stupid stupid. Openly talking about their world without even checking to make sure others around them weren't wizards or witches. Yes, the Draco they knew wouldn't be caught being seen with a Muggle...but a lot had changed in the last month or so.
Draco couldn't help shake his head at Goyle's remark. In he old days he would have pulled Goyle to the side and yelled at him for being dumb and not thinking first. Or roughed him up a bit depending on how severe the mistake was. He at least thought the others would have known better.
"And it still seems like you haven't learned much," Draco replied in a snide tone. He noted how easily he slipped into that tone. It was an attempt to at least warn him to shut up, but he doubted Goyle would pick up on it. He didn't want to single out Jake. He didn't want Jake to be their target.
