"I wouldn't mind a training session tonight," Draco replied with a grin, quiet excited by the idea. Those training sessions were always fun and he could never expect what would happen with Remus in charge.
He moved to sit down next to Remus. "It's a rather complex situation involving the Malfoy Mannor." Draco stated. He spoke in a more serious manner wanting to let Remus know he wasn't jesting or that it was some trick.
"And a conversation of yours had gotten me thinking. What if the werewolves had a stable place to live? If that would help their situation at all."
"Excellent!" Remus said as Draco agreed. He had really enjoyed being a teacher to his students at Hogwarts, something he missed more than anything minus his friends.
However, when Draco looked so serious, his own seriousness kicked in and he sat down, listening. He could well imagine things were complicated with the old Malfoy Manor. Many wouldn't want it for the connotations it held, many couldn't afford it, and he imagined also that the Malfoys wouldn't want to sell to just anyone.
Then Draco dropped that bombshell. He stared at the young man for several moments before his mouth worked, shut, then he tried again. "...Draco, what are you suggesting?"
"I was thinking that maybe we could offer the Malfoy Mannor as some kind safe haven for the werewolves." Draco quietly replied. He suddenly found it hard to speak it it took a few minutes before he did respond and he spoke in a careful tone.
"You saved my family and myself. It's a debt we can never repay especially with how we treated you before. None of us can return to our home, but we can't kept letting it just rot from not being used either. We thought...that this would be one way to repay you.
We were going to entrust the mannor to you and Tonks."
Remus needed that time to get over his shock. He couldn't believe what Draco was offering them. Tonks had known luxury to some degree (more like what he considered luxury) but he hadn't - he couldn't even imagine what the Manor would be like. What would they do with such a place? Would Tonks even want to live there? Would the Malfoys want it retained as it was? A place for werewolves to truly live? The Manor had grounds, he assumed. Ones they could wall in, or charms, for the wolves to run...
He rubbed his brow because he had a thousand thoughts and questions all at once.
"I.. I never expected to be repaid anything, Draco. I don't want you to believe you owe me anything." But... "This is... An incredible gift to offer. Are you certain you want to give up your home?"
"Yes, we've had a long discussion over it and in the end it was my decision on what to do with it. The Mannor would have went to me." Draco breathed as he shook his head in agreement. It was still hard for him to explain everything knowing how serious this was for both ends of the party.
"It took a while for my parents to accept the possible idea, but it does let the place still be with in the family. The only stipulation was to keep the Mannor as close to it's original design as possible...but it can be updated for things like electricity.
And we really don't want the Daily Prophet turning this into some kind of story and making it a skeptical. The two of you have time to think this over...just know that we aren't expecting anything in return either. It's not some kind of trick."
Remus let out a slow breath, struggling with where to start with this. First, he knew he needed to discuss it with his wife. "I need to talk to Tonks, first. There's... there's quite a bit on the line here. I... Thank you, also. Draco. You caught me off guard with this and I'm... not quite sure what to even say to this except thank you. I just need some time to decide on.. probably quite a few questions even before a decision."
"I know it was a a lot to take in...I wasn't sure how to even approach you on the subject with out being a big shock factor. This idea had been playing in my head for some time...
Go ahead and think about it and when you're ready to discuss more we can probably arrange to hold another discussion." Draco said still in a careful tone.
"What... What brought this on, exactly? I didn't imagine your parents were thrilled about helping werewolves, regardless of my nature personally." He didn't want to be cruel about it, or sound like he was rejecting such a gift, but he was trying to understand Draco's mindset. He didn't want to steal this young man's inheritance from him on a quick decision.
"Melinda had brought it to our attention that something needed to be done about the Malfoy Mannor. My father feels that he can never return to it as a lot of the obstacles he's still facing deal with the mannor. My mother also doesn't wish to return. Nor do I. Too much happened there.
Ultimately the decision became mine because the Mannor would have been given to me. My father felt it was time I made a decision on my own and used this as a starting point.
I'll admit they weren't keen on the idea. They almost denied it." Draco softly explained hating to even admit that part.
"But I also pointed out that this would help repay our debt to you, also show to the community that we were trying to change. Actions always spoke louder then words...."
Remus sighed quietly, thinking. It was a lot to hear that from a Malfoy, as they tended towards quite a lot of words, but that wasn't a terribly fair thought either. Draco was changing; perhaps his family was as well.
"And you're certain of this choice? You would always be welcome, you always have a place in our home, but if this is put in motion, I want you to be sure it's a decision you can live with."
"I'm certain of it," Draco replied in a determined tone.
"It wasn't a decision I made lightly. My parents are going this week to the Mannor with Melinda to retrieve all the paper work. They're also going to look at the condition of the place as well."
That wouldn't be an easy visit, Remus guessed. He took a breath and nodded. "...I understand. I'll talk to Tonks tomorrow when we're both awake." He gave a small smile, nodding. "I'll find out what questions we have, okay? I know Tonks will have some and... that's just the beginning of things."
"It's going to be a difficult transition for the both of us. I don't see this going to go smoothly as I wish it would go. I just wanted to try to some how help. Try to amend things that have been done." Draco said and gave a small smile. "Even though I think people will still try to use it against us."
"As much as they'll try to use it against us, even if it's none of their business. Still, if what you're looking for, in part, is to prove that you and your family are changing? I think you've hit on something that is going to make people start to question - in the right way - your changing." Remus gave a soft, warm smile. "Let's take this one step at a time."
But even if Remus tried to sound calm and warm and appreciative, which he was, he was trying to handle his brain's own piling of questions, possibilities, and worries.
Right. Training. Something more immediate. Remus licked his lips and tried to get his mind back on tonight's track instead of the infinite possibilities of tomorrow.
"Ah-" Think. "Last time we focused on some defenses. Barrier, reflective. Is there anything you have a keen interest on learning?"
There was a moment as he thought about it. He was trying to figure out what would be good tactics on handling his old gang out in the public if necessary. But he honestly wasn't sure what would be good strategy to use.
"How do you guys fight in public with out it becoming a big scene?" Draco hesitantly questioned. "The reason why I'm asking is because my old gang found out that I'm here now and tried to give me and Jake a hard time. I managed to talk them out of it, but I think I only won by surprise because they didn't know how to handle the fact that I was hanging out with Muggles. I'm pretty sure they will try to give us a hard time next time they see me."
Oh dear. Jake, that Muggle boy Draco had taken to hanging out with. Not that Remus wasn't pleased that Draco was making friends, still somewhat surprised he had made one with a Muggle, but this was... dangerous for everyone involved. His hand came up, scratching his chin as he thought.
He nodded, then stood up. "Tonight, we'll work on prevention, then... and I think we need to talk a little about how to be friends with Muggles." He went to gather his coat, tossing Draco his. "Ready to apparate out there?"
He gave a nod and caught his coat. There was a slight frown at the mention of a talk. Even before Jake had discovered his secret, he thought he was doing the best he could with no guidelines....and now...now there was a talk? He could have used the advice long before this.
"Ready!" Draco replied as he shrugged on his coat.
Remus hadn't thought it would progress to this point - nevermind that figures from Draco's past were catching up to him! And if Draco had needed advice, all he had to do was ask. He asked, now Remus would give him advice. He offered his arm over to the younger man, then concentrated for a moment before Apparating.
When he opened his eyes and got past that not-so-lovely feeling, he nodded as he saw the familiar moonlight-covered moor. "Welcome home," he murmured to himself before stepping forward. "Draco, who exactly tried to start something with you?"
"Goyle..He called me a traitor and holds me for Crabbe's death," Draco softly replied. It took a moment for him to deal with the Apparation. He readjusted to the new surroundings. It was clear he still had some feelings toward his old gang and that it hurt to now be on opposite sides.
"He was about to pull his wand out, but I was able to talk him out of it. Zabini and Knotts were also with him."
There were people he would need to speak with about this, as if this became something more difficult or more egregious, there would be documented precedence. "I'm guessing, from what you're suggesting, that this was in front of your friend. Public?" Remus needed as many details as Draco would provide; he wouldn't simply let this slide. He knew Draco's little gang had barely slipped from the clutches of a cell after the war.
"It was just in front of me and Jake. Luckily, they didn't say or do anything that revealed our world," Draco replied. "I think they were surprised to see me out in public let alone with a Muggle."
Public location where more Muggles could have seen. However, Remus steered the conversation slightly, looking curious to Draco as they stood among the heather. "What were you prepared to do, if Crabbe had drawn his wand? What would you have chosen to do at that point? What if the other two had stepped in?"
Draco frowned slightly at the question. "At the time, I had already placed a shield over Jake as we were talking. I would have told him to run though if things looked like it would get rough....And if necessary use memory charms."
This conversation made him uncomfortable, only because of this was dealing with his friends from the past and current...and he wasn't fond of using memory charms.
