Tonks had not been pleased by any of the news. The situation was getting more out of control and something she had never really readily agreed to sign up for. The Malfoys were a difficult family to deal with in general. The news that Remus just told her mixed in with the good news was not something she had expected to hear first thing in the morning.
The two had been yelling all morning--thank goodness for the silencing charms. A part of her just wanted to give up on the situation entirely. They were dealing with a lot already before agreeing to take Draco in. But Tonks knew how much this meant to Remus and why Remus was trying so hard to help the boy. The boy had changed a lot under their care since his arrival. It wasn't a waste of time.
"Once they remove their blinders and see what's going on they will disown Draco in a heart beat. Despite the love they have for their son. They did it to my mother. They'll also blame everything on us for introducing him to the Muggle world. I'll admit that I'm surprise that Draco bonded with that boy pretty quickly and the boy's friends as well.
The Mannor...I'm not even sure what to think on about it. It's a lot to take in and I can't help but think there's more to it. A fine print that we haven't read yet. As much as I don't want to, I think before we make any decision we will have to actually discuss with them about the house. Even if Draco was the one to make the decision...I'm more wary on his parents."
Tonks sat on their bed with her arms wrapped up around her knees. She was trying to keep an open mind on things, but it was extremely difficult. Right now she wanted to talk with her mother and get her view on things.
"What do you want me to do, Tonks?? Just turn my back on him? Draco needs someone more than ever and he has no one because everyone's been driven off or dead!" He gripped at his hair, looking to his wife with pain in his eyes. "I know what it's like to be alone with no one to turn to. It's the worst feeling a man can have and he's still so young. Even if they blame us... there's little they can do. The Malfoy name is disgraced, on both sides. You said it yourself... he's doing so much better. He's less of a prat, he's trying to help around the house and with Teddy, he's been polite. All of that since he started staying with us. Ignore the bit about the manor, for now, if we have to. Talk to your mother about it. I just..."
He scrubbed a hand over his face. They very rarely fought, and it hurt to do so about anything. What more could he say?
"I'll go and take Teddy with me and visit my mother. I'm at a loss on what to say or do about how this situation progressed. My main concern is how this is going to effect our family. We're already under enough stress." Tonks replied.
"Do you honestly think we can take Draco if this does happen? I know how you feel about this situation, Remus. I'm trying to keep an open mind on this...but it's very hard. Especially with how we've been treated in the past."
She hated arguing with Remus. It left her torn. She wasn't sure if they would be able to find a common ground to agree upon on this one. That's what made it worse.
"I'm not going to condemn him further for the actions of his family. He's taken the steps to change that his family I doubt will even approve of. If we throw him aside, abandon him, we are telling him everything we've told him is a lie. We're telling him to never trust anyone again. We'd be no better than the Malfoys." Remus' voice was soft, watching his wife.
"Go talk to your mother. Maybe... maybe she can help." Or make it all worse.
Tonks gave a small frown at the valid points Remus had made. He would be basically abandoned by the whole community. And that was a fate she wouldn't want anyone to have. It could also lead to a new Dark Lord as well. Yet, a small voice kept telling her that the Malfoys had set themselves up to it for everything.
"Maybe...I hope she can bring a different light to the situation. I suggest that you have a long talk with Draco as well of what all of this could mean. When I agreed to this a while back...I had never dreamed it would get this complicated."
"Frankly, neither did I." He offered a hand towards her, wanting that small touch to try and ease the tension in them both, almost like the nudge of a canine's muzzle. "I'll sit down and talk to him once I know he's awake." Thank goodness for the silencing charms.
His eyes met hers, his own quiet and a little sad. "I love you. I'm sorry this has gotten more complicated."
She reached over and grabbed his hand, letting him know she wasn't that mad at him. It wasn't entirely his fault for how things unfolded.
"I love you too... I know it's not your fault for what's going on." She spoke in a soft voice, the anger and disappointment gone. It was more apologetic.
His smile to that was so soft, so warm. He might have been nervous and concerned to the point of ridiculousness before he accepted Tonks' love, but he did love her with all of his heart. "Do you want to be here tonight to meet this young man Draco's so fond of? If you want to stay at your mother's, you can. I need to decide... what's going to happen given that he found out the truth." Which was another not-so-little obstacle to overcome.
"I will be there. Meeting the boy may give us an idea of what to expect." Tonks replied and reached over to give him a quick kiss. At that point Teddy was awake and crying so she climbed off the bed and headed toward Teddy's room.
Remus sighed slowly and rubbed his brow, worried for Draco, this young man Jake, and the whole of their family. He and Draco needed to talk before Jake came. So he went downstairs, wishing with a sad sort of smile on his lips that he could change into Moony at will. The idea of being able to go for a run would have been lovely right now, just to clear his head. He went into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee for both of them, wondering when Draco would be awake and around.
This wouldn't be an easy talk on top of everything from the previous night.
Thankfully, Remus didn't have to wait too long. Upon hearing movement around the house Draco woke up. He didn't get much sleep too worried from the nightmares and what today's meeting would bring. The stress still showed in his expression when he greeted Remus.
Sigh. Remus gestured to the brewing coffee. "Would you like a cup?" He was long since addicted, even over a cup of tea, but only in the mornings. The rich smell infiltrated the whole downstairs. "...Didn't sleep well?" It was written in the darkness under the young man's eyes.
He gave a weak nod in answer to the coffee and that he didn't sleep well. "Not a good night," he admitted. The coffee would be a big help at this point.
A small, sad sort of sigh. He nudged the chair out next to him, leaning his elbows on the table with his hands wrapped around the mug, warm between his palms. "Draco... have a seat. We need to discuss all of this and decide what to do. And... what might happen." This wouldn't be easy and he knew it.
Draco couldn't help but tense at the words. This was starting to remind him of the conversation he had with Jake a few days ago. He sat down in the chair indicated for him. It was going to be a very stressful day already. It didn't look like things went well between Remus and Tonks, if Remus was already starting the day with this conversation.
"Alright...Did I really mess things up by becoming friends with him...and forming feelings?" he hesitantly questioned.
"Mess things up, no. But it's... become more complicated because of it." Remus tapped his index finger slowly on the mug in his hands. "We need to discuss what might possibly happen. Tonks wants to meet this Jake of yours, and so do I. I... need to decide what will happen with him. If he's capable of truly keeping this secret and maybe do a little research on his family. If we can find any sort of past connections to the wizarding community, that would help, but if not and he doesn't seem like he can handle it, I have to deal with that."
He held up a hand. "He might need to just forget about magic, that's all, but... Draco, you haven't known him for very long."
At the mention of Jake forgetting about magic, Draco frowned and looked away. He knew that he only known Jake for a short amount of time...but it was hard to explain that things just felt right around him. He could trust Jake with anything and know that it wouldn't be used against him.
"Researching his family might be hard... Jake said he was adopted. His parents also don't speak to him anymore. He keeps in touch with his sister and their grandmother....Their grandmother I think is from our community. Judging by the way he describes her leads to that direction. Although, she's technically not related either just a long term friend of the family." Draco willingly explained. "I just didn't catch his grandmother's name...I should have asked."
Well that got more complicated. Remus' brows knitted as he listened, trying to follow. "So Jake is adopted. Is this sister a half-sister? A full sister? Not blood related? And the grandmother... can you get information? Or no, we'll ask tonight when he's here." Another small shake of his head. "Why do you get the feeling this grandmother - not related, you're sure? - is part of us?"
"His sister is the only child his family naturally had. It sounded like they had a lot of complications...which is why they eventually adopted Jake. Jake said that she didn't use any technology either and that he actually had to write her letters in order to keep in touch. That one had stood out the most. Jake relies heavily on his technology. He had said that she was different from all the rest."
Draco replied as he took some time to think about the grandmother.
"That does give off the impression of one of us, but it could just be an eccentric Muggle. ...A squib, perhaps?" He brought up a hand, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. Needed to shave, still. Tonks wasn't keen on his idea of seeing how he looked with a beard someday, so shaving it was. "We can prod a little tonight and ask him more about her and his family, but I don't want to push too far. Really... Tonks and I need to meet him first."
He had a few thoughts in the back of his mind, things he wouldn't tell Draco about. This was enough of a concern to know that possibly this young man might not be able to keep such a secret and they would all get in trouble for not having turned him in... perhaps they might need to make certain he told the truth on his intentions.
"Maybe. I never thought of that." Draco admitted and gave a small frown realizing that the little information he could give wasn't enough to really help. There had been more questions he wanted to ask Jake, but was worried it was too much to ask right away.
"Talking about his family though is bit of a sensitive subject for him because of what happened," Draco pointed out. "His grandmother and sister though are safer subjects."
"I'll keep that in mind." Remus shook his head a little, trying to keep this all in the back of his head. "...I know well enough that this is going to be a sore subject, Draco, but we can't avoid talking about it either. Do you have a plan in mind to discuss this with your parents." Not so much a question as a statement, blank and blunt.
Draco frowned as he took a drink of his coffee. He could feel his face pale even more then it was now. "I know I have to. If I couldn't hide it from you, I know I won't be able with my parents. Maybe my father...but my mother would find out in a heart beat.
I don't even know what to say or even how to approach the subject. I might have been easier if maybe Jake was a wizard too...but the fact that he's Muggle as well is not going to make the situation better."
"Then you need to decide on what you want to do." He spread his hand on the table, trying to make sure that Draco understood the ramifications of his actions. "You need to realize that by being in this relationship - one I don't have a say against, before you think otherwise, Muggle or man - you are risking your parents disowning you. I know they love you, and I want that to be what comes through in the end, but that risk is there."
"I know...Jake lost his parents because of his choice. But...how can I be myself if I'm always having to hide who I am?" Draco replied his expression filled with despair. "If I keep doing what my parents expect me to do I'll just be where I was before....I would have my parents and that would be it. I never expected any of this to happen when I came here."
