"I didn't intend to upset everything when I came into your home. Maybe theres still some of the teacher in me that doesn't want to see him sounding... helpless. Or maybe it's because I became a father I can understand better." A half of a smile and he came over, silently offering to help out with the meal.
A part of him missed the microwave though. Tonks had fallen in love with it and it was some of the Muggle items scattered throughout their home.
He gave a silent nod, and allowed Remus to help. "She was already upset from the start. Anything at that point would have started something. Draco had mentioned you had some ideas....of what could help us..."
Lucius looked at Remus unsure if he wanted to know what those ideas were. He did know he was tired of living this way and simply wanted to see his family whole again. It was putting a strain on all of them.
"I did have a few suggestions," Remus started cautiously, knowing this could rapidly go downhill as it had earlier. "Draco could have a bright future ahead of him, and his actions out there only proved it more so."
He hesitated, hands pausing as well. "Frankly, Lucius, I think he is the way that the Malfoys will be accepted more in society. Given a chance to prove himself, along with knowing why you all were pardoned, I think is your best chance. Not a perfect one, but even if it doesn't succeed for the family as a whole, I am certain it will for him, provided he is willing to learn and perhaps change as well."
"I never wanted my son to take the blame for my mistakes, let alone carry the weight of it. I can accept what I have done. If you think that Draco can be saved and bring respect back to the Malfoy family I would be willing to hear everything out and persuade Narcissa that it will be okay."
While the left overs were reheating, Lucius went about preparing some tea. It was more or less to keep busy. The conversation was difficult for him, but he wanted to hear things out. And if Remus was their only opportunity he didn't want to loose this chance.
"I think its a chance, not a promise, but I can only leave it all on you as a family to decide if you want to take it. I think he needs to get out, be with people, and learn where he wants himself in life. He can't do that here. ...Tonks and I would be willing to have him with us."
There, he said it. A big statement. Offering his home to someone who had once been a student and an enemy.
"You would be willing to take my son in despite our family's history and the trouble we've given you?"
Lucius was a little surprised by the statement. He wasn't sure how to feel about this whole situation. If it meant it could help his son...he would do it.
He knew his son was miserable here being cooped up inside taking care of his parents. The boy never even got to travel the world like he should have. That would have given an idea of what the boy wanted to do with his life.
"Are you willing to deal with the constant questioning and the challenges that it'll present by taking my son into your home?"
His own hands shook slightly as he knew that he was afraid to let his boy go. Only because he knew the boy would be constantly challenged for what his parents had done.
"I'll consider it a dry run for when Teddy's older," Remus joked lightly, but more seriously he added, "I'm willing to give him a chance. Like I said before, I can't promise that it's going to work out, for any of us. A week in and he could hate us and apparate home swearing against half bloods." A pointed tone, there.
"He's a young adult, but if he acts like a child, Tonks and I aren't about to let him get away with it, either. He'll have to decide if he's willing to follow someone else's rules of house."
There was a point that Lucius had as well. "I know some people will be less than pleased, but others will be accepting. I'm a werewolf. I'm used to people challenging my life and my right to a life all the time."
"The child that you knew as a teacher is gone. The path he recently took forced him to grow up really fast. I only blame myself for allowing him to walk that path.
I personally think my son could become a well respected person if given this chance. My wife has a hard time trusting others now especially with what happened. She is afraid that things would end up the same or worse. She almost lost her family once.
Considering that the two are still arguing, I know that Draco really wants this. I think this change will do him good...and show to society as well that people like us can change. The fact that I am entrusting my only child to you is a statement a lone.
Everything I've done has always been for my family. That much has not changed."
He shook his head and began to place the food on the table now that everything had been reheated. "Don't worry about waiting for Narcissa and Draco....they will eat later."
"We're in a similar boat. I'm putting my son and wife under strain, possibly in danger, on an unknown. A chance. I had to convince Tonks this was a good idea. I only did so after I spoke to Draco and I believed what he had to say."
He went to take a bite of food, his stomach grumbling for it, when he coughed hard. Turning his head to the side, he winced, bringing a napkin up to cover his mouth. The damage done to his body before the Wolfsbane potion had been invented would always remain.
"You and Narcissa are allowed to visit as you wish, of course, but I ask you let us know before hand only in case my son's down for a nap."
"I'm not so sure that would be a wise idea...Your wife is actually related to my family. Her mother is Narcissa's sister. Narcissa hasn't spoken of her since she was disowned," Lucius commented. It was a fact that the Dark Lord often tried to use to humiliate Lucius's family.
He looked away not saying anything when Remus started to cough.
Cousins. That meant Narcissa was Tonks' cousin, and therefore both husbands cousins-in-law. Somehow there had to be a terrible irony that he was somehow tied to such old Pure blood.
"I see. Tonks... doesn't speak about her family often." Awkward. "Maybe it might be better if Draco does come here, then."
It seemed to be agreement on Lucius' part, but what about Narcissa? From the arguing? Less than good.
"I will talk with Narcissa later. She will need time to calm down and let everything sink in. She will have to be reassured that she won't be loosing her family," Lucius replied. Hesitantly he tried to eat his meal before him. It was always so hard to eat anymore as everything tasted bland and that what ever food he did manage to eat didn't settle well with his stomach.
"We had always wanted a big family, but were lucky enough to have Draco and even in that itself it was a battle. That is why she is extremely protective. If she were to have it her way Draco would never leave her side."
Dare he even try the rest? Remus' lips thinned, faintly tasting blood at the back of his mouth. "I'm not entirely surprised by her reactions, honestly. The protective mother is one of the most powerful things in existance."
Not about to bring up Potter. Nope.
"...have you thought about your own health?" Going there.
"My health is mine to bare alone. I take full responsibility for what I've done and the consequences that go with it. I refuse to be locked up in St. Mungos," Lucius replied, his face darkening. He tried his best to keep his voice from rising.
"The little pride I have left would be ruined if the Daily Prophet were to find out I was there...and whose to say they would even help me? If anything they would lock me in some room and forget I was there. It might as well be Azkaban all over again."
He pushed his plate of food away no longer hungry.
Oooh this was going to go well. "...what if I said i know someone I think who could help who would come to you, not that you would have to go to Mungo's? Someone who doesn't even know your family name. You would just be a patient. American woman."
Laying it out there but he knew it could be shot down.
"The answer is no. I'm letting you take care of my son and give him the path he needs to grow. That is more then enough." Lucius replied in a firm tone.
With a shaking hand he reached for his tea. At least that much he could handle and he wanted something to calm his nerves. The tea he had made specifically helped with that.
"Very well," Lucius answered. He wasn't planning on accepting help at all when it came to his self.
"You're help has been greatly appreciated. None would have done what you have done. We can supply Draco the money he needs to live with you. You won't have to worry about funding for him."
Remus had, in a small way, been expecting that the Malfoys would offer just that. Given his financial circumstances, it could often be very difficult at their household at times. Tonks pulled in an excellent pay, but they had been managing. Ever since Umbridge had passed that damnedable law back in the 90s that often kept him limited in jobs. It wasn't easy to overturn something that people still thought very necessary, considering how many of the werewolves had backed Him.
"People aren't as blind to helping a young man as much as you might think, Lucius, but we'll see what comes of it." He stood up, wincing as his ribs flared up. "I'll be back at sunset, if you could let Draco know?"
He was already concentrating on home, ready to curl up in bed pretty much until then.
While Lucius wasn't going to say it, he was going to make sure there was a little extra that Draco will give to Remus...for taking him in. He wasn't that rude to not give Remus and his wife some form of payment.
"I will be sure to let him know." Lucius replied and led Remus to the door.
"Thanks." An easy if somewhat awkward smile. "I'll see you all then." He stepped away from the house as not to be rude before he Apparated. All he wanted to do was find his bed. He wouldn't even remember face planting into it, zonking out hard. The pain in his body was just too much, no sleep, minimal food. They could order take out before he left for the Malfoys the next day.
He was actually in better spirits when he arrived the following evening; spending time with Tonks and Teddy (hair a brilliant cyan today) always revived him. So there was a small smile on his lips when he came to the door, knocking lightly. Hopefully hopefully things would go well tonight.
