Draco carefully worded. Before he met Jake, he didn't think nothing of it. Squibs, Muggles, Half-blood, Mudblood, etc...but when he saw how Jake felt somewhat insulted by the term he tried to be more careful. That along showed he was trying to be more considerate and was changing.
At the same time he wasn't too sure what Jake meant by the question since it was so broad.
